The seventh edition of the Indian Premier League saw a number of batsmen stand up and deliver impressive performances. Here’s a look at the top five batsmen in IPL 7.

Robin Uthappa: The Kolkata Knight Riders opener overcame a mixed start to the tournament to finish as the leading run scorer and keep the Orange Cap for IPL 2014. He may have failed in the final, but it was his first low score after 10 games. Overall, Uthappa finished with a massive 660 runs from 16 matches at a wonderful strike rate of 137.7. Uthappa registered five half-centuries and a few 40s during the course of the event. His highest score in the event was an unbeaten 83, and his average excellent at 44.

Boundary quotient: Uthappa hit 74 fours and 18 sixes in IPL 7.

Dwayne Smith: The Chennai Super Kingsopener was the second highest run-scorer in the event. In 16 matches, he finished with 566 runs at a strike rate of 136 and was, without doubt, Chennai’s best batsman in the tournament. He scored five half-centuries in the event, and rarely had a poor game, coming up with decent starts in other matches as well. Smith averaged 35.3 in the event with a highest of 79.

Boundary quotient: Smith hit 50 fours and 34 sixes in IPL 7.

Glenn Maxwell: He may not have had rollicking finish to the event, but the Kings XI Punjab dasher still finished in number three among leading run getters. In 16 matches, he amassed 552 runs at a brilliant strike rate of 187.7, enough for him to be chosen as the player of the tournament. Maxwell finished with four half-centuries in the event, but all of them were big knocks. In fact, with a bit of luck, all of them could have been hundreds. Maxwell finished with an average of 34.5 and a highest of 95.

Boundary quotient: Maxwell hit 48 fours and 36 sixes in IPL 7.

David Warner: Even as Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled, the left-hander stood out with his brutal hitting. In 14 games, he made 528 runs at a strike rate of 141. Warner finished with the most number of fifties in the event – 6, and also had the highest average among the top run-scorers, that of 48. Warner’s highest score in IPL 7 was 90. Unfortunately, his performances got lost as most of other Hyderabad players flopped.

Boundary quotient: Warner hit 39 fours and 24 sixes in IPL 7.

Suresh Raina: Unlike ininternationalcricket, the left-hander hasn’t tasted much failure in IPL, and this season was no different. In 16 matches, he amassed 523 runs at a strike rate of 145.6. Raina finished with five half-centuries in the tournament at an average of 40.2 and a highest of 87. Had he got better support from the bowlers, Chennai Super Kings could have done better than finishing in third spot.

Boundary quotient: Raina hit 51 fours and 19 sixes in IPL 7.
