With the latest edition of the Champions League T20 all set to get underway in a few days’ time, we build up to the tournament by looking at the previous editions of the tournament. In our fifth and final part, we look at the 2013 edition held in India.


Teams

A total of 10 teams competed in the main group round of the 2013 CLT20. Group A included Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Otago, Lions and Perth Scorchers while Group B featured Trinidad & Tobago, Chennai Super Kings, Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Brisbane Heat. Of them, Otago and Sunrisers Hyderabad made it through via the qualifying round. Otago won all three of their qualifying matches while Sunrisers won two of their three games.


Rajasthan Royals were the best side in Group A during the first round. They won all four of their matches in their group to finish on top. Mumbai Indians came second with two wins, one loss and one no-result game. Otago also had similar results, but they ended behind Mumbai on the run-rate basis. Lions finished fourth in their group, losing three games, and one match ending in no result. Perth Scorchers stood last, losing three games and featuring in one no-result match. They finished last owning to their inferior run rate.


In Group B, Trinidad & Tobago finished first with three wins and one loss. Chennai Super Kings stood second. They also won three and lost one game, but T&T had the better run rate of the two. In third place were Titans, with two wins and two losses. They were followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who won only one of their four games. They lost two, and one match ended in no result. Brisbane Heat finished last in Group B. They lost three games, and one match produced no result.


Semi-finals

Rajasthan Royals took on Chennai Super Kings in the first semi-final at Jaipur. Rajasthan batted first, and posted a challenging 159 for 8, Ajinkya Rahane led the way with a wonderful 70 from 56 balls, with six fours and two sixes. Pravin Tambe’s 3 for 10 destroyed Chennai as they finished on 145 for 8. R. Ashwin top-scored with 46 from 28 balls, but by that time the match was out of Chennai’s grasp. In the second semi-final, T&T took on Mumbai at Delhi T&T batted first, and posted 153 for 5. Evin Lewis top scored with 62, and Yannick Ottley made 41. Mumbai chased down the target with ease as Dwayne Smith made 59 from 38 balls. Sachin Tendulkar chipped in with 35. Sunil Narine claimed three wickets for T&T.


The final

Mumbai faced Rajasthan in the final at Delhi. Mumbai batted first and notched up 202 for 6. Dwayne Smith made 44, Glenn Maxwell 37 (from 14 balls), and Rohit Sharma 33. In response, Rajasthan were in the hunt at 117 for 1 as Rahane (65) and Sanju Samson (60) batted exceedingly well. However, they later collapsed, and managed only 169 in the end. Harbhajan Singh picked up four wickets for Mumbai Indians.
